Chang Mai

Located on the River Ping about 700 kilometers north of Bangkok and surrounded by mountains, Chang Mai is voted one of the top 25 places to visit in the world. It is a sprawling city with a population of over a million persons. Founded in the 14th century, it is rich in cultural heritage. The historic center covers about one square mile and is surrounded by the original walls and water-filled moat. It contains hundereds of elaborate Buddhist temples dating back to the 14th century. Complementing this, Chang Mai offers a cornocopia of exciting things to see and do - fabulous food, amazing night markets, world-class arts and crafts, treking, sports of all kinds, and most important, great hospitality everywhere. We spent a wonderful three days there, and didn't come close to seeing everything. Too busy having fun.

One tradition we really had fun with is that of purchasing a basketful of birds to release as a form of prayer. Available at almost every temple.

Wat Pra Doi Suthep

Wat Pra Doi Suthep is perhaps the most famous of all of the Chang Mai Wats. It is located on a mountain top about 10 kilometers west of Chang Mai. Built in the year 1383.

Tha temple is located up a steep hill from the parking area.

There are two ways to get up to the temple. The first is by asending this lengthy stairway.

It is 309 steps up. Gasp...

The easier way up is by this tram. We did both. The tram wins.

The arrival area is busy, with everyone removing their shoes and covering any bare legs with green pajama pants. No shorts allowed.

See what I mean? Fashion not!
